Unequal Childhoods

In the video Unequal Childhoods: Annette Lareau, she talks about Middle class, Working class and Lower class and the advantages and disadvantages all of them have. The middle class learn how to follow rules and how to be organized, and are more likely to earn a college degree. The working class learn the meaning of hard work and are more respectful towards their parents. Poor class children had greater imaginations because they played outside more and had greater social skills in an everyday setting also because of their interactions with their neighbors.

Middle class families had their children in more after school programs than working class and poor class families. Working class and poor class families relied more on the education system to provide them with resources needed to help their children learn because they themselves only have a high school diploma or less.

This video also talked about how we classify ourselves, Ms. Lareau said that most of us categorize ourselves as middle-class because we do not want to think of ourselves as less. She also mentioned that we do not pay that much attention to classes because we are not ruled by an monarch.

This video was so interesting to me because she is so right about parents relying on teachers and educators to do just that, educate their children. I have heard of so many stories that talk about that, parents relying so much on the school system to not only educate their children but teach them manners, proper etiquette, how to act in social situations, etc... but this video helped me understand why a little better.

I love how her and her team went into these families homes on a regular basis to observe different events within the families in order to gain data and understanding that determines how classes are constructed across the U.S.

Very interesting video and I highly recommend it as a tool to use when researching this topic.
