1.1 Module Summary

Family Life Education is about “preventive, educational, and collaborative approach to individual and family issues” (Darling, 2014, p. 4). This means educating parents on what it means to be a parent when they are thinking of having children, pregnant with their first, or already have them but need guidance. Family Life Education also means helping connect families with other professionals to assist with issues outside of the realm of a Family Life Educator.

1.5 Letter to the Mayor

Dear Mayor Malveaux,

I recently read an article that was published, and the reporter quoted you saying that you think “all family professionals are all the same.” I am writing you today to give some examples that may give you a different perspective on the different roles that family professionals hold.

  1. Family Life Education – Professionals in this field teach family members the skills and provide the knowledge they need to function as a family and then within society.

  2. Family Therapy – Provides a mediator to help repair broken relationships within the family and bring back the function of the family.

  3. Family Case Management – Assists the families with legal matters and walk them through policies to make sure they are compliant and provides local resources.

All three fields work together for the better of the family, but all require different degrees and different professional experiences to do their jobs correctly to better family function. Each professional has the same goals which is to build strong healthy families. I hope that the definitions of each field above have provided an explanation of the differences between each field and how each field serve families to better our communities.

Sincerely,

Chelsea Webb
