5.1 Module Summary
In this week reading I learned a lot. Adults learn in many ways and as the facilitator of the meeting we must appeal to all learning styles. As I was reading, I was thinking or brainstorming about many ways to achieve this during meetings. One way is by offering the general information and equipping others the present the details to groups in the best way they learn. This would be a great way to use team building exercises. Another way is by preparing the presentation or meeting in a way that will keep all participants engaged throughout the meeting. The use of visuals, providing handouts for participants to take notes on, go over the main points of the meeting at the start of the meeting before diving into the details. These are just a few ways to have a successful meeting.
The other thing I learned is that as we transition into a new role or take on another role that we are not very familiar with can make us feel nervous and out of our element. The more prepared we are and the environment that we create for the meeting can help not only us but the participants as well. We can also provide opportunities for adults to take charge of their own learning. Adults, according to the text, like to “learn by androgyny” and less like pedagogy. This is another aspect that needs to be considered when planning a meeting.
Out of this reading preparation is key to having a successful meeting. Asking questions, being orderly, knowing the participants, and knowing the expectations for the meeting will allow us to feel more comfortable and prepared for the meeting.

5.7 Great Leader TED Playlist
Everyday Leadership by Drew Dudley 6:02
I learned that we do not need to reach the top to be a great leader, that it is in the small things we do on a regular basis that can build our skills of leadership while already being a great leader. If we help one person, we have been a leader.

Trial, Error, and the God Complex by Tim Harford 18:07
Trial, error and making mistakes are steps we take to become great leaders. It is not about knowing everything about everything but being willing to ask for help and work as a team to achieve the overall success for everyone. Teaching others that not every situation has an answer and knowing that it is ok.
Listen, Learn… Then Lead by Stanley McChrystal 15:38
Something that Mr. McChrystal said has stuck with me “Leaders can let you fail but not let you be a failure.” I am going to aim to let this be my driving point as I develop my leadership skills. It is about allowing others to lead because of my leadership.
